21st Century Northumbria Herbal Project

Progress Report

Following the success of the Enquiring Minds Event, November 2017, 21 U3A members representing 14 U3As met in Newcastle 7th February for a half-day workshop. The attendees brought with them a wealth of knowledge, interest and enthusiasm. However previous knowledge is not necessary, just a passion for active learning!

A number of members have already started planning for activities associated with plant medicine including:

  • Carol Burnett’s Mini Physic Garden and Rose Hip Syrup making
  • Wearside U3A ‘Wild Patch’ project
  • Wear-Tees U3A Survey of medicinal plants growing along a disused railway line
  • Felicetta Smith’s (Durham U3A) research into medicinal plants in poetry

Carol Burnett, Project co-ordinator, produced a pack of information and resources and there was lively discussion as to how members can become involved following their particular areas of interest. 3 members volunteered to take a lead on various project themes : Carol – Plant recognition; Ron Burns – Botany and IT; and Anne Larvin – Science and use of medicinal plants and folklore.

There was certainly enthusiasm to take The Project forward and get more people and U3As involved. As a result 2 more half-day workshops have been organised in Newcastle 21st March and Alnwick 27th March. See the flier (click here Herbal-March) for more details and how to book your place.
