PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY

Leader: Keith Gent Tel: 01327 830949

Practical Philosophy Group meets at 10am on the second Tuesday of the month.

Each session lasts for two hours with a break after the first hour. All these groups are held in members’ homes.

No prior knowledge of philosophy is required and the emphasis will not be on academic learning but on applying philosophical issues to everyday situations in a practical way.

The intention is to approach the subject in a manner suitable for anyone coming to it for the first time and to share members’ experience of our busy modern world.

Those of you who have been involved with book reading groups may be familiar with the scenario where each member of the group chooses a book which then becomes the book of the month for all members to read. However, the person who chooses the book is required to provide a summary of the plot and another person does some research to find out how the book was reviewed. My proposal is that we follow a variation on this system for philosophy where each member in turn, chooses a piece of philosophical writing, or a you-tube video/pod-cast which all members can read or watch during the month before the meeting is due to take place.

A rota will be set up so that for each month two members of the group will play an active part:
• Person (A) who has chosen the piece/pod-cast will research it, so that they are able to say whether they agree or disagree with what is being said.
• Person (B) will simply be required to summarise the contents of the piece.

This new format will obviously require a greater commitment than the old system, but it is hoped that those who take part will derive considerably more benefit.

Any members who are interested in joining these groups, please contact the leader by phone or email using the link on the right.
