PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY 1

Leader: Keith Gent Tel: 01327 830949

Practical Philosophy Group 1 meets at 10am on the second Tuesday of the month.

Each session lasts for one and a half hours on Zoom.

No prior knowledge of philosophy is required and the emphasis will not be on academic learning but on applying philosophical issues to everyday situations in a practical way.

The intention is to approach the subject in a manner suitable for anyone coming to it for the first time and to share members’ experience of our busy modern world.

Subjects for discussion will be chosen democratically from podcasts available on the Internet. Members are asked to look at websites such as:

The programme for early 2021 is:

  • March 9th – Group Agency – What do we lose and what do we gain by being part of a group?
  • April 13th – Sea of Faith – What happens when we omit the concepts of God and the afterlife?
  • May 11th -The Real Problem of Consciousness – Why has human consciousness evolved?

PRACTICAL PHILOSOPHY 2

Leader: Keith Gent Tel: 01327 830949

This group will meet at 10am on the third Wednesday of the month on Zoom.

It will follow a similar format to Practical Philosophy Group 1. Members are not expected to have previous knowledge and the emphasis will be on applying philosophical knowledge to everyday situations in a practical way.
Subjects will be chosen from websites such as Philosophy Bites or the BBC’s Global Philosopher which allow members to watch podcasts before the meeting takes place.

The first meeting on Wednesday, 17th February will be based on a podcast featuring Kate Farkas called “Knowing a Person” – to answer questions such as “What can I know about another person” and “How can I know another person?”

Topics for March onwards will be selected by members at the end of the first meeting.

If you wish to join this group, please contact the leader on the above telephone number, or email using the link on the right.
