Antiques and Collectables
Group Leader - Christine
Due to the Coronavirus Crisis, Antiques and Collectables Group meetings were suspended until further notice. Please check to see if they are now going ahead.
We now have a Virtual Newquay U3A Blog to help keep our Newquay U3A members in touch. We would appreciate some interesting antiques or collectables related articles and photos to add to it, so please send links to on-line articles, photos, or email anything interesting to do with antiques and collectables to Virtual Newquay U3A
The Group meets once a month, usually on the last Monday unless there is a bank holiday, giving members the opportunity to bring along their items for discussion.
Each session is themed with a specific topic or activity with the aim of encouraging members to learn more about antiques and collecting by developing their ‘detective skills’ through shared knowledge and looking at the many ways in which research can be carried out.
The topics covered by the Group so far have been very varied ranging from silver and metal wares, vintage clothing and jewellery, ceramics, glassware, furniture, pictures and prints, books, postcards, coins, stamps and writing equipment to guest speakers, quizzes and organised visits to National Trust Properties, Antique and Vintage Clothing Shops, Collectors’ Fairs and Auctions.
Many of the popular subjects already covered will be revisited again in the future but in the meantime there are a number of topics yet to be considered, including:
- · Vintage textiles and home furnishings
- · Sewing ephemera, buttons and buckles
- · Vintage toys and games
- · Kitchenalia
- · Music Memorabilia (pre and post-1950s)
- · Arts and Craft movement
- · Art Nouveau period
- · Art Deco memorabilia
- · Retro memorabilia
- · Vintage and antique time pieces
- · Antiques of the future.
Meetings are now held at the Quintrell Inn, although venues will vary depending on nature of topic and activity planned. For further details please contact Christine.
