Beginners and people who have never played before or only played at school in the distant past are very welcome, as well as more proficient players.
Gus has played in tournaments and matches and can teach basic theories as well as more advanced themes such as strategy, tactics and opening theory. He usually goes through a game which illustrates these. He also emails a puzzle each week which is taken from actual games and then go through them at the following Friday meeting.
The benefits of learning and playing a game such as chess is that it has been shown to improve cognitive skills such as decision-making, creativity, concentration and problem solving. Research also indicates it improves memory and attention span. So, give it a go.
