History (Local, English)
Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month between 2 and 4pm in members homes to study local and English history. Various topics are covered, usually concentrating on social aspects rather than wars and politics.
This is a successful group that has been loyal since the U3A started here in Newport. Each member researches a topic or individual that interests them and then shares this information with the group for discussion. We have covered many topics over the years, from social aspects of the Tudors, through the Suffragettes, Victorian reformers, explorers and the impact of groups like missionaries, Methodists, medics and so on.
A recent topic was on the Georgians which eventually covered the Agrarian and Industrial Revolution, the Regency buildings, music and the arts.
Members often mention aspects of personal history or their local areas.
