Meetings are held in Newport Library on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2pm.
This Group held their very first meeting in November 2013. They decided they wanted something different from the local Book Clubs and planned their meetings so that each member would give a 5 minute talk on a recent book they had read, followed up with pertinent questions and comments. During refreshments and further discussion, members would then swap books. This proved to be a very successful format.
The Book Share Group has continued to meet every second Wednesday of the month. We changed our venue from The Swan pub to the Newport Library for which we each pay £2 per meeting for the rent of the room. Currently there are nine regular members and there is room for two or three more. During the year three members have dropped out and three have joined. This has affected the type of books we hear about and this has led to lively discussion about the subject matter, authors, their styles and background.
In order to keep track of the books members have borrowed, we keep a list and we have reviewed 136 books this year including factual, fiction and poetry. Our Librarian was interested to read this list to inform her about what books might be of general interest when she renews her order for the Library.
There are a number o reasons why members prefer this type of book share group which include their preference for learning more about a variety of books and not just one a month; acquiring awareness
of other authors, their styles and subject matter; the pleasure of sharing their enjoyment or otherwise of a book and comparing their views with other’s impression.
