MODEL MAKING

URGENT NOTICE 16TH MARCH 2020

In the interests of the members and based on current advice re Covid 19, it is with regret that the Executive Committee of Newmarket U3A has decided to suspend all meetings, activities and events until further notice. The situation will be reviewed mid-June. Please keep an eye on NOTICES on the NEWS page.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As we are a small group, we are actively looking for additional activities that we might run at the same time, both to support Model-making and to offer a wider range of activities for all our members. (See 2ND TUESDAY starting 14th January.)

Meanwhile, the group continues on the second Tuesday of the month, at 10am at Exning Road Club.

Free tea and coffee.

Report from February meeting

We were delighted to receive an exclusive talk at our Model Making group on 11 February when Phil Coulton, leading member of Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket Model Railway Societies, presented a talk entitled: “MY MODEL RAILWAY JOURNEY” - his personal progression from a Hornby clockwork set through a Triang train set to modelling Belgian railways today. The talk encompassed the history of railway modelling and covered different scales and gauges and ncluded lots of models as visual aids.

Bastogne rue de clervaux by Phil Coulton Phil’s latest model is of the town of Bastogne, which some will remember as the centre of ‘The Battle of the Bulge’ at the end of World War II. This was recently exhibited at the highly thought of Chiltern Railway Exhibition earlier this January. Phil included tips on building models and layouts and answer questions.

We would very much welcome some more members, particularly ladies and those building less popular models!

This group is for anyone wanting to model in any material and any subject.

Above all we provide you with a convivial and focussed environment alongside others with similar interests. You may be a regular model builder who would like to meet others or a 'first-timer' who, above all seeks some space and quiet to undertake a fascinating hobby.

You will need to bring all your requirements plus suitable material to protect the surface you are working on.

EXHIBITIONS & SHOWS INCUDING MODELS

Especially during the summer months there are exhibitions and shows about or including models of all types.

Often the advertising is not particularly good. For instance I happened to spot some signs for Ely Model Railway Club Exhibition recently. I attended it, and it was very interesting.

So if you happen upon advertising for an interesting-looking event, please send me the details, or just a link and I will put it on here for the benefit of all our members.
