DRAMA

SPECIAL NOTICE 16TH MARCH 2020- Due to the CORONAVIRUS crisis all U3A meetings in person are currently suspended until further notice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Drama Group We now meet on the fourth Tuesday morning of the month, from 10.00 - 12.00 in the Tesco Community Room in Tesco Store, Newmarket

.
As advertised everywhere, group members are not required to learn lines.

Our group is steadily growing but we have plenty of space for those with a secret desire to 'tread the boards'.

In January we start to look at the 2020 programme. Perhaps all you thwarted thespians should make a new year’s resolution to join us!

We have begun the new year with 14 members in the group and more promised in the future. This is very welcome and broadens the range and style of work we can perform. We seem to have developed an animal theme, our current rehearsals consisting of items from CATS, Toad of Toad Hall and Winnie the Pooh. However, this May sees the 75th anniversary of VE Day, (the end of the war in Europe), and we are also looking to create and perform some items on this theme during U3A WEEK (1 – 6 June 2020) and at other venues. It is very rewarding to see our members gaining in skill and confidence in rehearsal and in public performances.

.
Our meetings are currently suspended, but let's take it in turns to read something. Here's me, going first... See our Facebook page

15th June 2020

Hello Folks,

Here are two radio plays that I thought we could look at during our forth-coming Zoom session. They are both very long so I should focus on the first 10 pages or so. To Hull and Back has a smaller cast, mostly women, while Welcome to our Village has a much larger cast – I have indicated how the parts might be doubled up.

I have no idea how many people might join the Zoom session, so it will be a bit of a hit and miss session. We probably will only get 40 minutes, although I have discovered how to subvert the system!

Hoping to see you on line on 23 June at 10.00am.

Tim

Meanwhile ….

The U3A Drama Group had just begun some work on CATS by TS Eliot, when the lockdown began. We had been – and still are – intending to incorporate some of the poems into our annual December show. (Who knows if that show will happen.) This original poem written by Richard Clarkson may well be presented as the finale. see Rhythm & Rhyme Group Anthology ASKEW – THE COARSE-ACTING CAT

Our first performance of our 2019 show ‘Centuries of Comedy’, which consisted of nine comedy pieces from Shakespeare to the present day, was at Exning Road Club for the U3A Monthly Meeting on Monday 25 November 2019. This was followed by a performance on Tuesday 26th November 2019 at Tesco Community Room and a charity performance at the Arthur Rank Hospice is being discussed. This is a light, humorous and festive event.
