Group Consultant: Norman Newton 01463 792980
Group Co-ordinator: Margaret Patterson 01667 459458
The History Group meets once a month on Wednesday afternoons at the Nairn Community and Arts Centre. Please arrive at 1:45 for a 2pm start. Because the group is too large to meet at a member's home, and requires IT support, there will be a small charge to cover the cost of room hire.
The group discusses a wide variety of historical topics from the big historical picture to events in our area and the Highlands. In broad terms, we aim to encourage and support members, who wish to research their own areas of interest and present these to the group. However, providing a talk is not compulsory and some members are happy just to listen and learn.
It need not be high brow to be interesting!
Some of the topics covered recently were - Nairn Museum project on historic buildings in Nairn, "Little Norway" in Buckie during WW2, The Battle of Auldearn, "What we can learn from Bonnie Prince Charlie's hair", Burning of the Clavie in Burghead, US President Andrew Jackson, Tracing your Family History.
There can be one or two speakers, member discussions, reviews of interesting books, film,TV programmes. Members may recall their own, or their family’s, experience of historic events. No prior knowledge of the subject is necessary.
We are also supporting Norman Newton's work on cataloguing the effects on Nairn and Nairnshire of the FFW
as recorded in The Nairnshire Telegraph.
Meetings for the 2019/20 year. The Group will resume when the current Covid-19 situation is resolved.
If you would like to join this group, you are welcome to come along to any meeting. For more information, please contact one of the committee members or the group co-ordinator at one of the open meetings, or contact the history group co-ordinator direct.
