Group Co-ordinator: Norman Newton 01463 792980

The History Group meets once a month on Wednesday afternoons at the Nairn Community Centre. Please arrive at 1:45 for a 2pm start. Because the group is too large to meet at a member's home and occasionally requires IT support, there will be a charge of £2 per meeting to cover the cost of hiring a room.

The group discusses a wide variety of historical topics and in particular how the big historical picture was experienced in our area and the Highlands generally. In broad terms, we aim to encourage and support members to research their own areas of interest and present these to the group for discussion. It need not be high brow to be interesting! Some of the topics covered recently were - life in WW2 bomb shelters, the Nairn Bandstand's origins, how the Black Death affected Scotland, Irish ruins, The Statistical Accounts of Nairnshire.

There might be a single speaker, or a DVD, or member participation - recalling their own experience of historic events, for instance. No prior knowledge of the subject is necessary.

We are also supporting Norman Newton's work on cataloguing the effects on Nairn and Nairnshire of the FFW as recorded in The Nairnshire Telegraph.

Meetings for the 2017/2018 season are as follows:

2017: 25 Oct, 22 Nov, 20 Dec

2018: 17 Jan, 14 Feb, 14 Mar, 11 Apr, 9 May

If you would like to join this group, you are welcome to come along to any meeting. For more information, please contact one of the committee members or the group co-ordinator at one of the open meetings, or contact the history group co-ordinator direct.
