This group has regular outings to local live music fixtures. Currently the group is quite full. If there is sufficient interest there will be an opportunity for a second group to be formed'.
November saw members of the group going to a wide range of events. At Tavistock Wharf we enjoyed the music of T-Rex from the late 60's and 70's played by T-Rextasy. They played the singles we recognised and album tracks we didn't know but were obviously the style so recognisable from Marc Bolan and the band, great musicians and a great show.
At the Crownhill Legion; Plymouth Jazz Club; we listened to some music dating back over 100 years from The Pedigree Jazz Band. They also played numbers from the likes of Kenny Ball and Acker Bilk with some numbers we could sing along to.
Finally we went to the Plymouth Atheneum where we were entertained by The Zoots playing the music of the 60's. It took us back to music that we had grown up with. Behind the band they projected images of the original singers and we were encouraged to sing and clap - a - long to the songs. One comment from the group was we were so lucky to have lived through the 60's and enjoyed the great music of the era.
Vintage Jazz, Two Bridges Hotel
A cheery foursome went along to take afternoon tea and enjoy vintage jazz at the 2 Bridges Hotel. A local duet 'Fine Whines' entertained us with songs ranging from Hoagy Carmichael to Frank Sinatra. Both Sue and Chris played various instruments including Sax, trumpet and flute while Chris also sang for some numbers.
The music was a pleasant accompaniment to a tasty afternoon tea comprising of sandwiches, cakes and delicious scones with Hogs Bottom jam and clotted cream. A very sophisticated afternoon
Glenn Miller Tribute
A small group went along to the Devonport Playhouse to enjoy the Dave Hankin Band playing a tribute to Glen Miller. An excellent ensemble of 18, including trumpets, sax, trombones and bass playing tunes varying from little brown jug to versions of Verdi's Anvil Chorus and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue.
We learnt that many of Glen's numbers dated back to the 1880's for financial reasons, including 'When Johnny comes marching home'. Dave Hankin himself has retired from performing but is still involved in planning the performances. Well worth the ticket price!
Plymouth Guildhall Proms Night
The group enjoyed an evening in Plymouth Guildhall with the South West Philharmonia and Chorus for their Proms night. We were entertained with a varied programme starting with the stirring Zadok the Priest and including a medley of 007 tunes, Stairway to Heaven and the Radetsky March. The first part of the programme was finished with a selection of songs well performed by the Caradon Youth Choir.
During the second part of the programme the audience joined in with the Dambusters March, Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Brittania with lots of flag waving, foot stomping and kazoo blowing.
A great evening was had by the 10 group members who attended. There will be some video clips on our Facebook page.
free and varied music event at Dartington was attended by four members. The music was provided by college students the first being the Brass Ensemble, we enjoyed listening to them play in the sunshine in the courtyard. We took the opportunity for a walk in the garden before going to the theatre for 'Film with Live Music'. Neil Brand who has been a silent film accompanist had been course director for student who then played 'improv' to a selection of silent film clips. An interesting and enjoyable session. Our final event was 'New Chamber Music' we did find this was quite an alternative sound to traditional Chamber Music. Overall a lovely day out.
Please let Marilyn know of any other local events that may be of interest to the other group members.
