Latest news about groups from Jan Simpson-Scott, Group Convenor, November 2018

Open Morning October 2018 My thanks to all those convenors who worked so hard at the open morning to make it such a success. There was a wonderful buzz everywhere and plenty of enthusiasm from members and visitors. If any of you have ideas on how we could make it even better next year, I’d like to hear from you.

Suggestions for new groups
1. Crossword and Puzzle Compilers’ Group with Barb Cook as convenor. Please contact her for details if you’re interested in joining.

2. Italian Conversation: if you’re interested contact me (Jan) in the first instance.

3. Beekeeping: Paul Vickery will be the convenor. Please contact him via the website or via me (Jan) if you’d like to join his group. Initial meetings will be at Paul’s home.

4. Beginners’ French: Di Martin is willing to help someone who might be prepared to be convenor. Please contact Di in the first instance.: she would be happy to help with choosing a suitable textbook and to help with the structure and content of the classes.

At the moment, some of our existing groups are actively looking for new members: Allotment, Chess, Photography, Science, Mah Jong, The Returners’ Band. With winter approaching, now's the time to take up a new interest, and the convenors of these groups would be delighted to tell you more about what they get up to!

TOWNSEND HOUSE – USE OF MEETING ROOMS

Those of you who attended the October coffee morning will have heard John Batt, our U3A chairman, explain that Townsend House has been sent, out of the blue, a back-dated bill for £8,000 because EDF has decided we should be paying business rates for electricity. The Townsend House Trust's treasurer has, after much correspondence, managed to get the bill down to £3,000. However, that is still a lot of money for a charity which just pays its way. We are applying for help to a number of funds who gift small grants.

It will affect U3A, our major user, because we will have to put our room hire prices up from January 2019 as follows:

  • Main Room £20
  • Harbour Room £18
  • Upstairs £14

These rates are per session (ie either morning, afternoon or evening). We can also offer the library for one to one consultations at £10, available every day but Monday morning.

If you've already made and paid for any bookings, you won't be asked for more – but if your group can afford it, we won’t refuse the increase...

U3A members and others can also help the Trust as individuals by joining the Friends of Townsend House for a donation, minimum £5 (forms available from the House 10–12 MOnday mornings).

Jill Merer, on behalf of the Townsend House Management Committee

Other group news
Croquet
The group had a very successful initial meeting in May 2018. They meet every Friday morning from 10 am to 12 noon at Carhampton Recreation Centre; the cost is £2 per session, per member. Please contact the convenor Charles Birch for further information (contact details in newsletter).

The Returners' Band
Lorna Grove Smith writes: The group is up and running, meeting twice a month on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays. We are playing as a trio at the moment but are hoping to hear from others with any instrument to join us. My idea grew out of reading the U3A magazine; so many areas seem to have a band of some sort. I decided to offer to host a venue where musicians would know where to find other people with a similar interest to talk music, have a cup of tea, play a few tunes and generally hang out! It doesn't matter what instrument; if we can get enough mixed instruments together we could form a band within the U3A. The venue is my house in Minehead where I can seat about ten, if not more, so we don't need to hire a hall, and there will be a lovely fire during the winter. Do get in touch, if you are interested, with Lorna (contact details in newsletter).
