Tue May 7th A Writer's Journey - researching Human trafficking and modern slavery

Speaker: Helen Matthews

Helen Matthews is an author of psychological suspense and domestic thrillers, and now has four published novels, two of which include themes of modern slavery. The first novel After Leaving the Village has a theme of human trafficking and has recently been republished by publisher Darkstroke Books, under the title Girl Out of Sight. Her novel The Girl in the Van (published in March 2022 by Darkstroke) has a sub-plot around a different aspect of modern slavery known as 'county lines'. Her books are actually gripping pageturners that sometimes deal with important contemporary social issues.

Today’s talk covers Helen’s journey as an author, how she became interested in human trafficking, where victims discovered in the UK have come from, the country of Albania and the work of the anti-slavery charity, Unseen UK, for which she is an Ambassador, and donates her fee to that cause.

Tue Jul 2nd Three French Queens and the Shakespeare connection

Speaker: Emma Jolly

In sixteenth century France there were three influential Queens. Two had literary ambitions and were patrons of the arts – and their writings or their lives are reflected in certain plays. One, Catherine de’ Medici, was rather keen on power. Meet the Queens and see what use Shakespeare made of them, in his plays. Warning: sex, murder and heartbreak all feature.

Emma’s been lucky enough to have a career in education which embraced her love of English Literature and Language. She is slightly fanatical about Shakespeare and has carried out a lot of reading about the sixteenth century. She’s also written a couple of books about Shakespeare.
Tue Aug 6th Hidden in Plain Sight - reminders of WW2 in New Forest

Speaker: Marc Heighway

During the Second World War the New Forest area saw a huge amount of activity. It was home to several airfields, training areas, D-Day camps and an embarkation point, a secret spy school, a POW camp, traps were set for invading armies, and it was also the scene of the biggest ever bomb dropped on UK soil. This presentation takes the form of a photo tour and talk on areas of the New Forest you will be familiar with, but showing you things left over from the war you might not have noticed before, and some of the stories behind them.

Marc is a local military historian and keen photographer. He is a SEO Consultant and runs a digital agency with offices in Bournemouth and Southampton.
