Modern Jive

U3A MODERN JIVE FUN DANCE BEGINNERS CLASS -- CHANGED TO MONDAY -- SEE BELOW

To email Edina our group contact please click the bluebird symbol.

We have a new venue at Christ Church Hall - it has a lot more room and a great dance floor, however they only have space on Monday on a regular basis, therefore we have changed the day to Monday every 2 weeks from 29th July.

Our U3A Modern Jive Group is a joint venture with Gravesend U3A. A great way to meet people, have fun & keep fit in a relaxed atmosphere whilst learning to dance. Modern Jive is much slower to dance that traditional Jive & has the distinct advantage of minimal footwork. We are fortunate to have an experienced couple, Alan and Lynne Scott, who have agreed to get the dancing started & coach the group on a regular basis. They have danced Modern Jive locally for over 15 years.

£3 per class. Please bring your U3A membership card. It’s a beginners class every time so you will not get left behind if you couldn’t make last time. Please note our new venue with a much larger dance floor: Christ Church Hall, Old Road East (B261), Gravesend, DA12 5NR. Enter Hall via Car park - Hall is behind the left side of the Church. PARKING: Christ Church car park is limited, please car share if possible
Park Avenue to right of Christ Church or Sun Lane by Echo Square.

MODERN JIVE: No experience is necessary & it is the ideal style of dance for men or women with two left or even two right feet . . . you will soon be amazing family & friends with all your new moves! Individual dancers or couples very welcome; please come along & give it a try. We are sure you’ll all be pleasantly surprised at how much fun you will have!
Modern Jive is a slow paced male led dance & is easy to learn.
There is minimal footwork, keeping feet on the floor with no bounce
It’s very much slower than the jive you may have learnt in your youth.
We will deliberately use slower music.
It’s danced with partners & we change partners regularly, so everyone gets to dance & learn the moves.
It’s ok for some ladies to take the male lead & dance with other ladies.

MODERN JIVE MUSIC
Most music with a regular beat, we will dance to 50s 60s 70s Pop, Rock, Motown, Country Electronic, etc & some modern music. Great for parties.

FORMAT
Introduction & warm up to learn basic stepping in stepping back & hand tension.
Beginners class learning 3 or 4 moves, walking through 1 move at a time, changing partners after each move then adding each move as we speed up to dance all moves.
We will change partners multiple times.
Class will be around 1 hour --- then 1 hour to practice until 9:30 --- during this time you can dance freestyle to practice moves or add your own --- again changing partners regularly --- or have a rest or refreshment provided

EXTRA DANCERS
We have more ladies than men signed up --so to ensure there are no long queues ladies can take male lead or otherwis slot in between dancing couples across all rows, then you are the next to dance as we change partners while learning the moves.
We need more men!!

WHAT TO WEAR
Shoes --- smooth sole on ball (ideally leather with no or minimal grip) otherwise most shoes. but not trainers as these will limit swivel (try doing the twist in your shoes),
Small heel ok for ladies --- no need to buy anything new!
Clothes --- anything, however you may get a little warm so loose fitting & absorbent clothes are best.

RULES
Always smile
Never say sorry when it goes wrong
Remember it’s not serious --- it’s only dancing!

BENEFITS
Good exercise
Good Social
Good for well being
You will be able to go to a party & dance to a lot of the music played --- & impress everyone!

HOLIDAYS/COMMITMENTS
This is an on-going fun beginners class with no start or end --- so its ok to miss the 1 or 2 classes or more! --- every class we learn beginners moves & you will never be left behind. We match the coaching to the class & make it fun!

SEE MORE: There are some videos of the moves on the new MU3A website (https://www.meophamu3a.org.uk/) so you can remind yourself or practice.
