Our monthly meetings provide a friendly, informal opportunity for members and non-members to socialise and to talk to committee members and group leaders.

These monthly meetings are held at 10:15 for 10:30am start on the THIRD FRIDAY of every month at the Christ Church Hall, 124 Lord St, Southport PR8 1AA

There is usually a speaker at these meetings and we hope to introduce a diverse and interesting topic each month. If you have any ideas of who you would like to speak, or topics you would like to know more about, please let any committee member know.

Any changes to groups, notices will also be recorded here

Membership renewal is due in March.

A recommended talk by one of our members, Lionel is a local man and “Friend Of Bank Hall” he is coming to tell us about the history of one of our local buildings. Please come along and support him.

We are really pleased to announce a revisit to the Turkish restaurant, Bar Med on Coronation Walk. We have booked Turkish Mezze which proved popular on our first visit. 23 April is St George’s day, which we thought worth celebrating as St George (AKA George of Lydda) was a Turkish national.

We are arranging a pub meal at The Cheshire Lines, followed by a couple of simple ‘pub games.’ One of the ‘games’ is loosely based on ‘Would I Lie to You?’
No special skills or knowledge are required.
Participation is of course optional but it is good fun!

Fri Apr 26thCoach TripsCoach trip to Dunham Massey
We are recommencing coach trips in collaboration with Birkdale and Ainsdale u3a. These will take place on the last Friday of each month. As the last Friday in March is Good Friday, we shall recommence from April with a trip to Dunham Massey on 26 April. Details of this and future trips will be available at the meetings.

Tue Apr 30thLocal historyThere are two spaces available for a talk by local historian David Walshe on ‘Southport Street Names’ at the Windmill pub. The talk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday 30th April. A couple of us are meeting earlier for a meal. There is no charge for the talk but seats do need to be reserved. Please let Eileen know if you want to attend either via the Local History group page or see her at the meeting.

The May wine tasting will be on Tuesday 7th May at Kim’s house in the Hesketh Park/Churchtown area
Kim is well known for her hospitality and is hoping, weather permitting, to host the event in her wonderful garden, the theme will be Italian. People will be paired off, or can sign up in pairs, to decide what food and drink they want to bring.

A walk around Kings Gardens followed by a breakfast at Wetherspoons on Lord Street.
It’s a circuit of the southern half of the lake, back across the venetian bridge.
The walk starts at 10am and breakfast is whatever you want, even just a cup of coffee or a bacon roll.

So now we have finally managed to get him please come along and support him. I am sure he will probably have a few copies of his books to sell as well
Sat Jun 22ndLets Go GroupBlackpool Ballroom and Afternoon Tea
We are considering a group outing to Blackpool, with the centrepiece being the afternoon tea, served in the Ballroom, with its magnificent decoration; the venue for the final of “Strictly Come Dancing”. During our time there, we will be entertained by the organist on the mighty Wurlitzer. You can stay as long as you like, and take a spin on the floor if you wish.
We will do this in groups sharing a car. We currently have at least 5 places for non drivers.

Lets Go are planning a trip on the Mersey Ferries Birdwatching Cruise. There are two dates - Sunday 30th June and Saturday 31st August. The cost is £25 for the cruise however if we get 20 people, we can get a group discount. We would need to be at the ferry for about 10am but being a weekend, train travel will be on our Mersey cards. Pete is a returning speaker to us and is coming to give us his fourth lecture. In this fascinating lecture the magic door will be opened, slightly, with plenty of magical surprises and hidden curiosities that will make you feel spooked. There is also a very interesting presentation on the history of playing cards.

Brian is someone else who comes highly recommended-as a very interesting and entertaining speaker, he has given talks to the majority of u3a’s in the area and numerous other organisations too. He is in great demand. He will be talking about numerous events during his time as a customs officer, very amusing speaker
