This is a taster course for those who wish to try lawn bowls. In order to make the best use of the outdoor season which normally starts in mid April, the course is advertised once or twice in the Spring so that those deciding to take up the sport after the 4-week taster coaching can join a Club and play till the second half of September. There are Clubs in High Wycombe as well as the Marlow Club and no pressure is put on U3A members to join any particular Club. However, the Convenor can ensure support and encouragement throughout the season to those who decide to join the Marlow Bowls Club.
Most of those who come from the U3A are novices and the 4 coaching sessions of and hour and a half each are aimed at giving novices sufficient knowledge of the laws and the physical skills to join in with games organised by the Club or for them to “roll-up” with their friends. Bowls is good exercise requiring a degree of eye and hand coordination and balance. It can be played purely for social and enjoyment reasons or it can be very competitive. At least one U3A member has gone on to play at Leamington Spa in the Nationals. The opportunity to play in away games against other Clubs exists once the novice has played for a couple of seasons. Organised games and internal Club competitions are both mixed and single sex arrangements.
The coaching of novices is free but there is a small green fee of £2.50 per session paid to Marlow Bowls Club for the use of the equipment including the loan of suitably sized bowls. In the longer term the cost is for purchasing bowls shoes (£45-£50), a second hand set of 4 bowls say £25 – £50 and possibly a Club shirt
