Market Drayton

British History

The history group have spent the last year studying famous Victorians, followed by Riots and Rebellions. We have had sessions on Emma Darwin and Miss Beale and Miss Buss, Peterloo, the Miners’ Strike, the Rebecca Riots and many others.

We are beginning 2017, in January, with a presentation on the photographer Fox Talbot. From February to November we will be studying Empire and Exploration. How did we acquire an Empire? Was it Government policy or was much of it down to intrepid explorers? What stimulated these explorers, glory, money, land or trade? Was the Empire a good thing? By the end of 2017 we will hope to know the answers to these questions.

We meet on the third Tuesday of each month at 10.30am in the The Beacon Centre, Market Drayton. There is a small charge per head to pay for the rental of the room (£3.00 for three months) and refreshments are provided.

Members of the group are encouraged to research an area within the overarching themes, either individually or with a friend and then share their findings with the group. This is not compulsory, but we are a friendly encouraging group and welcome new members. Please email or phone if you are interested.
