Grumpy Old Men
Covid-19 status - Because of the restrictions the Group hasn't met for a while. However, some members are keeping in touch by by weekly 'Zoom' sessions on Wednesday afternoons at 4 pm. If you are a member and would like to join these meetings contact the Group Leader
We are not really grumpy! We just allow men only to join our group.
We are a thriving group that has detailed aims and format. We meet monthly in a local hostelry and do whatever takes our fancy over a pint or two. Discussion and learning is our prime aim. We also encourage each member, in turn, to organise a visit to a local place of interest.
January 2019 No visit.
February 2019 This visit to the Ten Pin Bowling Centre at Guyhirn, organised by myself was for mixed 10 Pin Bowling with the ladies (Sweet Young Things, or so they say). An enjoyable day with prizes for the highest scoring men and ladies, afterwards many of us adjourned to Wetherspoons for lunch.
March 2019 This visit organised by myself and Allan Whyte was to the Museum for Armed Policing at Chatteris. This was an excellent visit, well attended (20 members)where the 2 policeman running the museum went into great detail regarding various well known major incidents.
April 2019 Colin Head organised this visit to RAF Wyton where we heard volunteers (ex RAF personnel) giving talks on the WWII Pathfinder Force, the history of planes and people involved in aerial photography and the importance of information gained, also a talk given by a chap from army intelligence. An interesting and entertaining visit.
June 2019 Barry Pope organised this Canal Boat trip (two 35 foot narrow boats)along the River Nene from Foxes boatyard in March stopping off at Outwell for a Fish & Chip lunch and back again. Another good day out enjoyed by all.
June 2019 Ron Hall organised this vist to the Newmarket Stud (this was the July visit brought forward to end of June). The very knowledgeable guide gave us a bit of the history of the Newmarket Stud, showed us some stud horses and foals, gave us a few stories gained over the years and generally entertained us. After this we had lunch at the Wavertree Cafe onsite, some of us went on to the Jockey Museum in Newmarket town while others made their way home.
August 2019 The visit to Peterborough company 'Masterroast', the 7th largest supplier of roasted coffee in the UK, was organised by John Smith. They supply many of the main National Outlets, including many well known retail organisations and coffee outlets such as Nero, Costa, etc.
September 2019 No visit this month.
October 2019 Thanks to Dave Walton for organising a trip to Peterborough Greyhounds for 15 of our members on 18th. We have been there a few times but the food remains excellent and it’s just a fun evening especially if you manage to make a profit!
November 2019 Nothing planned this month.
December 2019 Over 20 members met at the Ship on the 19th and enjoyed a very tasty Christmas buffet supplied by the lovely Gemma. A good time was had by all.
January 2020 Clive Winn did a sterling job in organising this month's trip on Wed 29th Jan.to Peterborough Greyhounds (unfortunately since then they have closed down due to the Covid-19 lock-down situation). I understand that there were around 10 members on this trip and a pleasant evening was had by all, and although money was lost on the dogs no one seemed too worried.
February 2020 This month's trip was to RAF Marham on 12th Feb. Dave Walton did an excellent job in organising this 'well sort after' trip (restricted to max of 20 members). It commenced with a presentation by Training Officers regarding various aspects of the airbase, various talks at the Heritage Centre, a guided coach tour of the airbase and it finished with a static display of a Handley Page Victor and Panavia Tornado.
February 2020 A 10 Pin bowling match between the Sweeties (unofficial) and the Grumpies for late Jan. was cancelled due to insufficient numbers.
March 2020 Tour of Kings Dyke, Whittlesey, Brickworks 6th March organised by Colin Head. In view of the number of members interested, the tour covering various aspects of the brickworks (operating 3 days a week) took place in the morning and was repeated again in the afternoon. An enjoyable day and a hearty meal and refreshment in Wetherspoons Whittlesey. Well done Colin.
April 2020 Visit to The Shuttleworth Collection at Biggleswade, Organiser Win Fox.

May 2020 Visit to Bletchley Park, cancelled due to Covid restrictions Organiser Roy Neesom.
