Wine Appreciation 4*
Wine Appreciation 4 is run on similar lines to our other wine groups. The tastings are held in members homes on the fourth Thursday of the month at 19.00. At the moment there are no vacancies in the group but contact the group leader for more information.
A somewhat tumultuous 4th year for our little group as our much loved and respected friend and member, Karen Troop, died in the spring. While she was gravely ill we came together for friendship, but had no formal wine tastings. Otherwise we pressed forward, and our tastings in September 2017 began with wines bought back from a holiday in Greece. The Greek wine has improved tremendously recently as descendants from the major vintners have been sent on courses and adopted modern production methods, meanwhile while making a return to the ancient wines of Greece, such as Athiri and Mandilaria. Other tastings were from the Rhone and Danube valleys, Argentina, Austria, California, and for a change, trying the wines of one producer - Barefoot. We ended the year with a tasting from Chapel Down, including three of their sparkling wines. Pleasant but overpriced was, I think, the general consensus. If any of you are holidaying in Kent, a visit to the vineyard in Tenterdon, and perhaps a tasting or meal there makes a pleasant diversion.
A lesser bomb shell came at the end of the season when my body clearly told me that wine was no longer welcome! As you can imagine it would be a dire insult for a wine group to be run by a teetotal leader, and so, sad to depart, the reins have been handed over to Sheila Headworth. I am very grateful to Sheila, and happy to know the group is in capable hands.
In case any of you would like to see our favourite wines from last year, or our programme of tastings, you will find them on our sub page.
