Interest Groups are the lifeblood of all U3A’s and Maidstone Invicta U3A has an abundance of enthusiastic members. The U3A ethos of self-help and learning from others is alive and well at MIU3A where all members are encouraged to share their knowledge and life experiences offering a combined breadth of knowledge to Interest Groups which are run by the members for the members. Study materials and mentoring support are available through National Office in a diverse number of subjects, free of charge.
Usually, Groups meet in members’ homes, some, such as Digital Photography Table Tennis, Badminton and Watercolour Painting, meet in a Community Hall. Take a look at the TIMETABLE SUMMARY and make contact with the Facilitator of the Group which interests you.
Although a Group may be listed as ‘full’, this does not preclude another Group in the same subject being set up; quite often, all that is required is the organised gathering together of members with enthusiasm for the same subject and, of course, a willingness to learn. Interest Groups’ Coordinator, Liz, will help you through this process, just let her know your idea for a new Group. Use this link for more details of the role of Group Facilitator.
There is no fee for joining an Interest Group apart from a few exceptions where, as previously mentioned, the hire of a hall is required. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the Group Facilitator directly from the Group pages shown below.
NEWS FROM THE INTEREST GROUPS COORDINATOR:
Three new Groups are about to be setup namely: Art Appreciation Group 2; Basics of Signing; Jewellery Making, each with a Facilitator in place.
Regarding the recent requests we now have interest in forming the following new groups: Line or Country Dancing 13 names; Recorder playing 6 names; French beginners 9 names; Lunch Group 3, Play Reading; French for beginners, these require you to get together and make a start, contact Liz for help.
Other requests awaiting your input are: Dutch speaking; Folk Club, Rock ‘N Roll Country Music, IPads & Tablets, Quilting Group 2, Outdoor Activities to include Cycling, Archery & Kayaking, Afternoon Tea, Supper Club, Swing Band.
A new Facilitator is required for Film Group to enable its continuation.
NOTE: Our very popular MOTO Group – Members on Their Own – is now oversubscribed. Please give serious consideration to getting together with another member to start a parallel Group or, stay in the original Group and help others to get a 2nd one running, let Liz know.
For many of the Interest Groups, you don’t necessarily need experience or particular skills, the ‘Leader’ learns along with the members of the Group, enthusiasm is, however, a pre requisite together with a little spare time, the desire to be part of a friendly team and to be with like-minded members who also wish to learn. Speak with others to ascertain their interests which may well coincide with yours and, there we have the basis for another Group for your enjoyment.
As in all matters relating to the formation of a new Group, your Interest Groups’ Coordinator, Liz, is your first point of contact.
Please note that in order to take part in any of our Interest Groups you must be a paid-up member of Maidstone Invicta U3A. See the Membership page for details of how to become a member.
