Visit to Belmont House and Gardens and Provender House, both near Faversham
cost £41.00
We start at Belmont House and Gardens where we will be given a guided tour of the house and then around an hour to look at the gardens. General George Harris bought the 18th century house (designed by Samuel Wyatt) in 1801 with the prize money from his successful military career in India. It contains fabulous mementos of the family’s history and travels, fine paintings, Indian silverware and the finest and most extensive range of clocks in private hands in the country. The gardens surrounding the house are a charming mix of formal and informal planting, herbaceous, woodland, fruit and vegetables. In the afternoon we visit Provender House, a breathtaking 13th century house and walled garden which is the home of HH Princess Olga Romanoff. Having been home to adventurers, explorers, nobles and of course princesses, it is a charming collection of personalities represented in architecture. Its famous own rs have made continuous additions over the centuries and Princess Olga, after the death of her mother in 2000 embarked on an extensive restoration project with conservation architect Ptolemy Dean and together they revealed a house that represents a fascinating record of English life over seven centuries.
