Chess - Beginners & Improvers
Chess was invented long ago.The names we use for the pieces date from the Middle Ages. In those days kingdoms were ruled by Kings and Queens. They lived in Castles and had Bishops to advise them. They also had brave Knights to defend them. Even the Peasants (pawns) helped to defend the Kingdom.
So if you would like to be part of this Kingdom, why not come along to the U3A Chess Group for Beginners and improvers.
We now meet regularly at a Member's Home every second and fourth Wednesday of the month between 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm, due to the recent increase in interest, we may hold unscheduled meetings on any Wednesday when there is not a scheduled meeting, (contact group leader for more info). Our group has grown to 10 members, however there is always room for more, especially as not all members attend every meeting. We can accommodate up to 10 members at any one time but will always try to squeeze in more if necessary.
All good quality equipment is provided for easy learning. We are looking to increase the frequency to weekly from the beginning of 2019 providing there is enough support to do so.
Whatever your standard, the emphasis is on enjoyment. We are a friendly and welcoming group. We are small but would like to grow. To do this we need more members. Why not come along for a free taster. If you would like to speak to somebody about it, details are below.
People say it is a game for academics, that is certainly not the case. If I can learn to play then anyone can!! You will be able to learn the rudiments of this fascinating, complex but basically easy game, and how to write down the moves so you can replay the game and see how to improve your playing skills.
