This group (formerly Philosophy 3) has been running since November 2011 and has discussed a wide range of philosophical topics. We have a mixed approach, sometimes using articles as a basis for discussion, sometimes a topic introduced by one of us, and sometimes using texts, such as, for example, Plato’s Republic and Hume’s first Enquiry.
In 2019 we had an extensive look at ethics and the wide ranging ideas on what it means to be ethical ranging from Kant’s ideas on duty to do the right thing, Utilitarianism (the greatest good for the greatest number) to virtue ethics (the virtue or moral character of a person rather than duties or consequences).
We also looked at the following
• Lying and in particular the ideas of Sissela Bok
• What is love? (for our Valentines Day meeting!)
We meet on the mornings of second and fourth Thursdays in the month, at a member's home, and above all try to ensure that all our regular members leave both enlightened and entertained.
