Science in the News
Group Leader: David Pinney 0115 877 9669
Meetings are held from 10am to 12noon on the first Thursday of the month.
The venue is usually in Breaston.
The aims of the group are:-
- to keep members up to date with some of the latest developments in science and technology,
- to get a bit nearer to the truth behind some of the more sensational headlines,
- to discuss the possible significance of new discoveries and developments beyond what has been mentioned in the news items.
Group members bring to the monthly meetings news items that they have gleaned from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and websites, to dicuss in an informal manner. No scientific background is required, just a wish to understand more about the changes which could affct our lives.
Originally the group concentrated on sustainable energy but in March 2009 it broadened its scope and was renamed with its present title. Since then an enormous range of topics has been discussed, ranging from improved sewing needles to life sciences and nuclear fusion.
