Philosophy comes from the Greek roots philo- meaning "love" and -sophos, "wisdom." – love of wisdom.
Seeking to understand fundamental truths about ourselves, the world in which we live, and our relationships to the world and to each other
Philosophy is a way of thinking about certain subjects such as ethics, thought, existence, time, meaning and value involving: responsiveness, reflection, reason and re-evaluation. The aim is to deepen understanding.
A search for the meaning of Life, The Universe and everything
What does it all mean?
The Philosophy group (formerly Philosophy 3) is a highly successful group that has been running since November 2011.
This new group, Philosophy 2, was formed in November 2019 as a result of more interest from new members than Philosophy could accommodate and is being run by the same leaders on alternate weeks.
The aim is to use a mixed approach, sometimes using articles as a basis for discussion, sometimes a topic introduced by one of us, and sometimes using philosophical texts. We are not limiting ourselves to any particular area of the subject and members of the group will be encouraged to suggest topics to be discussed.
We began by looking at online lectures on ethics by Michael Sandel, and then the Socratic dialogues of Plato.
No prior experience of the subject is required, just an enquiring mind.
Above all we try to ensure that all our regular members leave both enlightened and entertained.
We meet on the mornings of the first and third Thursdays in the month, at a member's home.
