London South East

Heritage Group

We organise meetings and outings on the broad subject of “Heritage”. We have a wide view but we are biased towards industry, public art, local history and exhibitions, some museums.

Frequency and Start Date: Ad Hoc (See emails to Heritage group members for details) We try and meet on the Last Friday morning of each month.

Friday March 22nd 10:15

This was a well attended meeting if you missed it you can catch up with the video using the link that is in the Latest Heritage Newsletter.

Friday April 26th - Crossing the River Thames 10:15 for 10:30 start
Roger Mead will be presenting a talk on crossing the river from the earliest stages when the choice was London Bridge or the closed shop of the Watermen and their ferries right through to the end of the 20th Century. We will concentrate mainly on the local ways of crossing the river so you will learn about the Horse Ferry at Greenwich, the history of the foot tunnels and some of the other ferries in Greenwich and Woolwich.

An open meeting all S E London members are invited. Refreshments will be available so bring £1

Friday May 31st The Thames Sailing Barge Trust
Many of us will have seen the magnificent Thames sailing barges that still, from time to time, sail up the Thames past our Greenwich foreshore. This talk will provide an insight into the barges history and information and the current work on the preservation of a couple of the barges.
John Rayment will present an illustrated talk on the work of the Trust. The Trust aims to educate the public in the history of the Thames Sailing Barge and works with schools and other organisations in explaining the history of these iconic vessels as well as holding open days and attending other events.

Wednesday 22nd May 2024 2pm Tour of Royal Arsenal Woolwich
THIS EVENT IS FULLY BOOKED AND THE WAITING LIST IS NOW CLOSED

For almost four hundred years Woolwich Arsenal was used to build and test guns and ammunition. Visitors were not allowed, and it had the nickname of “the secret city”. Since the military moved out in 1994 the area has been redeveloped and is now accessible without problems. We are going to explore with a special focus on the 20 or so listed buildings and through them tell the Arsenal story.
Our walk of two miles will take about 2 1/2 hours and is accessible being on paved surfaces with no steps and just a few cobbled areas. There will be a short refreshment stop on the way. Our meeting point will be near outside the Woolwich Elizabeth Line Station. The booking details are in the March Heritage Newsletter. (link on this page =)

Friday June 28th am, please book the date subject yet to be confirmed.

We meet at Horn Park there is no need to book just turn up. At 10:15 talk begins at 10:30
