Beginning chess

A few tips on how to start playing the game.

The image on the right shows the starting position of a game of chess. Note the following:

  • The bottom-right square is white (as is the top-left). This is important
  • Both Queens sit on their own-colour square
  • All pieces face their opposite number - Rooks are opposite Rooks, as are Kings etc.
  • For the White player, the bottom-left square is called 'a1'
  • If you're playing Black, your bottom-left square is called 'h8'

...and don't forget - White always moves first!
