Science and Technology is part of a shared group hosted by Petersfield U3A which is proving popular with both scientists and non-scientists alike. Meetings take place at the Community Centre, Petersfield on the fourth Tuesday of the month commencing 2.00 pm.
Meetings mainly take the form of a lecture with questions to follow and excellent speakers have been lined up for 2018.

Visits to places of scientific interest and to other organisations hosting scientific events are sometimes arranged.

Members interested in this group are requested to register with the Group leader by e-mail (if not already done so) in order to keep abreast of developments.

This year we will be experimenting with some 'in-house' presentations and discussions.

Visits to places of scientific interest and to other organisations hosting scientific events are sometimes arranged.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MEETINGS 2019

Tue Apr 23rdGenetically Modified Crops and Europe - Euro sclerosis or intelligent precautionary principle? - With John Pidgeon, a retired agricultural scientist and former director of a BBSRC Research Institute.

Dr John Pidgeon led the scientific team that produced perhaps the first evidence anywhere that, properly managed, a GM herbicide tolerant crop could be better environmentally than the same conventional non GM crop. This generated much controversy. John will briefly review this field experimental work, and consider how and why emotionalism triumphed over reason at the turn of the century and thereafter - the onset of the age of un-enlightenment. Specialist molecular biology knowledge is not needed, and John hopes the discussion will generate more light than heat.

Tue May 28th"Climate Change-Disasters and Coping with them"

Andrew Ryder ex Environment Lecturer at Portsmouth University

Tue Jun 25th"Controlling anxiety and worry"

Sara Langston of Southern Health NHS - A presentation on . How stress affects us physically and mentally. Relaxation skills and other practical ways to manage it.
