Limebrook Maldon

Real Ale

Group Leader - Mike Stringer

Who we are

The group has now grown to 18! We all like our real ale but we also like the company. All the places we go – except the brewery tour – will offer cider and wine as well, and probably gin. So don’t let the fact you don’t like real ale put you off coming along on our trips.

What we do

We visit local pubs, breweries and beer festivals. We all having a liking for real ale – or beer brewed the traditional way. Add in good conversation, good food, fresh air, opportunity to travel, and a convivial atmosphere!

How often do we meet

About once a month, the exact day depends on bus times, opening times etc. Future trips will depend where we are going and, for beer festivals, when they are being held. We like to “go with the flow” so will pick events that tickle our taste buds!

Plans for 2020

Our first trip of the year took us into Chelmsford, to Lower Anchor Street, for lunch at the Orange Tree, followed by stops at the Queens Head and the Hop Shop. Our second trip saw us venture out to Hatfield Peverel, to visit the Wheatsheaf and the Cross Keys.

Our next planned trip takes place immediately after the History Group visit to Chelmsford Cathedral, so we will be staying in town, this time visiting The Ship, where we will have lunch, then on to one of the hostelries near the bus and train stations. This will be on Thursday 12 March.

For the first time, the Maldon beer festival will not coincide with the U3A meeting, however, we will still be going along, with our visit scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday 16 April, at the Plume School.

For the future, Harwich is on the agenda, well worth a trip, as is Leigh on Sea, providing we can resolve the travel logistics!

Other options are Stow Maries, Cold Norton, Little Totham, Goldhanger or Tollesbury, different pubs in Colchester, and the Crouch Valley Ale Trail. There is also a new possibility, Sudbury, two Good Beer Guide pubs with a Wetherspoon between them, and a lovely train ride out to the country. Plus a range of beer festivals big and small, there are two in Chelmsford for starters.

On future dates, tentatively these are likely to be late May or early June, early September and October, and finally the December Christmas outing. Thursdays seem to be the preferred day, though we may have the odd Wednesday trip. So provisional dates for the year are:

28/29 May or 2/3 June
3/10 September
1 October
10 December.

If you would like to come along to any of these events, or find out more about them, I am the group co-ordinator, so please speak to me at the monthly meetings or contact me direct.
