Poetry Group 2
The group meets on various Wednesdays in the month at 10am by arrangement.
The quote “keep a poem in your pocket” is an apt phrase for this poetry group. Each month members share poems relevant to our chosen subject or poet. Searching for and reading poetry, can often be quite challenging and thought provoking and lead to interesting discussions, whilst funny poems cause us great amusement.
Recently the subject was “hobbies”. One member wrote a poem about her previous very pro-active hobbies that have now changed to more mentally stimulating ones e.g. crosswords, quizzes and of course reading books and poetry. A sentiment we all acknowledged. Another member's hobby is making quilts that led to an interesting discussion on the history of quilt making. A poem on “trainspotting” called to mind an amusing incident that happened on a train. Every meeting is a learning experience!
Although some poetry may be difficult to read and understand, many poems can have a meaningful and therapeutic effect. A charity called “Poems in the Waiting Room” produces leaflets with specially selected poems. These are distributed to GP and Hospital waiting rooms for people to read when they may be experiencing stressful periods in their life.
Bailey The Labrador continues to attend the meeting, listening to the poems but he is particularly keen on the tea break when biscuits are around!
