PICARESQUES: an exploration of travel writing (new)

THCC Mondays 1000-1200 fortnightly from 14th Oct

This course continues into next term Tutor: Jane Irons

The session on 11th Nov will run 1400-1600

‘How serious artistically and intellectually can a travel book be?’ Or, why write a travelogue when you could write a novel? This two part course will take these questions on board by looking at a broad spectrum of texts ranging from the 1930s to the present day. We will consider how travel writing cuts across generic boundaries, how the strategies of fiction are often used to romance fact, the concept of travel writing as a form of global politics, and how an exterior journey can be closely allied to an interior journey. We will also be reading some very interesting and entertaining books.

14th Oct The Road to Oxiana Robert Byron
28th Oct As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning Laurie Lee
11th Nov When the Going Was Good Evelyn Waugh
25th Nov A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush Eric Newby
9th Dec The Way of the World Nicolas Bouvier
