James Joyce,Portrait of Artist
James Joyce, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) (new)
THY Wednesdays 1015-1215 weekly from 16th Jan (5 sessions)
Tutor/Convener: Arnold Goldman
Each meeting will begin by listening to a professional reading of a short section of Joyce’s first novel, followed by our discussion of what we’ve just heard. After an hour, we’ll have coffee/tea, and then we’ll listen to and discuss the next section. So 10 sections will cover the whole novel, taking us 5 weeks. The sections to be played are abridged, and members will want to have read the relevant section in their unabridged print copy of the novel, which is available in many editions. I’d recommend the Penguin Modern Classics edition, ed. Seamus Deane, or the Oxford World’s Classics edition, ed. Jeri Johnson. Course members will be informed where each of the ten sections begin and end.
