World of Thomas Hardy
The World of Thomas Hardy (new)
THY Mondays 1400-1600 fortnightly from 1st Oct (6 sessions)
Tutor/Convener: Dorothy Harrison
Reader: Ann Thomas
As with my Jane Austen class, this class will contain lectures, readings and class discussion. We will concentrate on five novels: Under the Greenwood Tree, Far from the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, The Return of the Native and Tess of the D’Urbevilles, though we may well mention others you may have read. Each week we will discuss a topic rather than an individual book, so if you can’t manage all five, you’ll still have plenty to discuss. It should be a lively course, so get reading, Hardy fans . . .
The topics will run as follows:
1st October: Thomas Hardy’s life
15th October: Comedy and Tragedy
29th October: Men, Women and Love
12th November: Hardy and Religion
26th November: A Changing Society
10th December: Pot-pourri: Any topics not yet raised, or general discussion: students to decide.
