QMCR Wednesdays 1000-1200 weekly from 7th Nov (5 sessions)
Convener: Kay Blackburn
Spain has produced many famous and influential artists from El Greco to Picasso and Gaudi, and has made an important contribution to Western Art especially during the ‘Golden Age’ of Spanish art and in the modern period.
In this course we will begin to explore artists painting in a number of genres from still life, portraits, devotional works and history paintings. Artists discussed will include El Greco 1541-1614, Zurbaran 1598-1664, Velazquez 1599-1660 and Murillo 1617-1690. We will study their work in the context of Spanish society of the time.
In week 1 we will place the work of the more well-known Spanish artists by looking at the Islamic artistic and cultural legacy, together with work of the Spanish International Gothic and Catalan Schools.
The subsequent weeks will cover the above named artists, beginning with El Greco. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion and debate.
