Haydn String Quartets-a taster
Haydn String Quartets - a taster (new)
THY Wednesdays 1015-1215 (4 sessions: 9th May, 16th May, 6th Jun, 13th Jun)
Convener: Euan Reid
Minimum 10, maximum 18 participants
The Lewes Chamber Music Festival takes place from June 14th-16th this year, and live string quartet performances will again be at the heart of the Festival. These U3A sessions in May and early June will be a chance to prepare for the live performance pleasures in store at the Festival. The plan is to listen to CD recordings of some of the finest quartets that Joseph Haydn wrote over his lifetime, and also to talk a little about their origins and about the different performances they still inspire. The four proposed sessions are offered both to those who have always meant to, but never quite got round to exploring this repertoire, and also to those who already know and love these quartets. Each session will begin with some sampling of movements from the quartets from different periods of Haydn’s life, and finish over coffee with a complete performance of one work.
Euan Reid has played viola in string quartets for most of his life and attributes his relative sanity to this activity.
