THL Tuesdays 1000-1200 fortnightly from 23rd Jan
The first part of this course was run in the previous term.
Tutor: Roger Cockrell
Convener: Anne Figgins
This year marks the centenary of the Russian Revolution. Starting with
a look at the history of revolutionary activity and ideas in Russia, the
course will proceed to examine the impact of this cataclysmic event on
Russian society and culture during the crucial first few decades after the Bolsheviks came to power in 1917. In conclusion, there will be a
discussion of the extent to which it continues to shape the attitudes and behaviour of the Kremlin today. Throughout the course there will be reference to key texts that will illuminate our understanding of
particular topics. Texts this term will include Trotsky, Literature and
Revolution, H.G. Wells, Russia in the Shadows, Mikhail Bulgakov, The
White Guard, and Andrey Platonov, The Foundation Pit. All texts will be
introduced in English translation; no knowledge of Russian will be required.
