Poetry and Short Stories on Fatherhood (new)
CH Mondays 1400-1600 weekly from 14th Jan (8 sessions)
Convener: Dorothy Goldman
The subject of this eight week course is fatherhood—how it is captured and explored in poetry and short stories. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, we will explore, discuss, analyse and enjoy different interpretations of fatherhood—from Anne Bradstreet to John Updike, from Ben Jonson to Katherine Mansfield. This tiny poem by Seamus Heaney gives a taste of how much can be captured in 13 words:
But I face the ice this year
With my father's stick.
Copies of the poems will be provided and all the short stories can be found in Stories of Fatherhood, edited by Diana Secker Tesdell (Everyman Pocket Classics). I can provide copies of the short stories for anyone who wishes me to do so. There is nothing to prepare for the first meeting.
Numbers limited to 16.
