This course will follow the format of my previous courses, combining lectures, readings and class discussion. This time we will concentrate on just one novel: George Eliot's masterpiece Middlemarch, which offers an abundance of topics to discuss. This will allow us to examine the text in detail, and with Ann Thomas’ help, to hear the authentic voice of George Eliot and her views on life in the nineteenth century.
The topics will run as follows:-
13th January: George Eliot's life
27th January: Different kinds of women
10th February: Different kinds of men
24th February: Change
9th March: Moral values, individual and collective
23rd March: Middlemarch: why is it considered a great novel?
