Sugar Craft

Hello I am Christine the leader of the sugar craft group. I moved to Leigh in July 2011 leaving Basildon after 60 years. A neighbour in Leigh introduced me to my local u3a, this group, I had no knowledge of. With a little apprehension I went along to the meeting as a visitor. The welcome was lovely and people I have never met were so kind. The first hour we listened to a very interesting speaker.

Then the Chairperson of the u3a updated news on groups and asked if anyone would have a new group they could start. So inspired by what I had seen and experienced in such a short time I put up my hand - Sugar Craft I said. On that day I signed up and also joined Bridge lessons, out of my comfort zone but a passionate teacher and again very friendly group.

My group started Friday 21st October 2016, from 10 am until 12 noon and is is a weekly group.
We have tea and sometimes try each others' cakes and it's great to share our recipes and laugh at our failures. I now also hold a Monday group also 10 am until 12 noon.

You don't need any tools for the first day as we will be covering the subject and I will demonstrate some easy flowers.
Just bring your U3A card and £2 to cover the cost of materials provided by myself for you to complete each project. Refreshment is included in this price.

You don't have to make a cake but just get involved with off the cake displays. I do help with cake covering and demonstrate this when cakes have been made.

Our next project is sugar wheelbarrows filled with summer flowers.
Thank you to all our sugar craft team for showing their lovely decorated cakes on the U3A open day 20th June 2018.
Now back to our wheelbarrow project for more fun and games. August wheelbarrows is a big project as we need many flowers to fill it. We are trying to complete at the end of September when we can upload pictures.
October arrives and we now have to put our wheelbarrow project to one side again. Because that crazy time of year is around the corner, Christmas, we are beginning plans for the cakes. I am very excited because we have some new sugar molds to try out, new for me and the latest craze. We will return to wheelbarrows in the new year as this is not a project to rush.

Since starting this group we have made cakes for Easter, Christmas, Birthdays, Parasols filled with flowers, small wired sprays and spring Daffodils in pots. We are not able to show all our work on this site because of the space they consume. But we will show each project when completed and this will subsequently be replaced by the next one. We are keeping a photographic hard copy.
Unfortunately our groups are full in sugar craft but I will be happy to put any members on my waiting list.
