Science and Technology
Convener: Richard Thompson
Topics for discussion are chosen by group members to reflect the challenges of current developments in science and technology.
The format of meetings varies. Sometimes one member gives a talk; sometimes several of us make shorter contributions. We do not restrict ourselves to scientific theory but also discuss the social and economic implications of technology. In June and July we usually go on visits instead of holding formal meetings.
The group welcomes all U3A members who are interested in exploring and discussing scientific developments and their implications.
When: 2.30pm, on the last Thursday of the month, usually but not always at Age UK, Clarence House, Humberstone Gate, Leicester LE1 3PJ except for the visits usually arranged for June and sometimes also for July, and except for August and December when we do not meet.
The September 2019 meeting will be on Thursday 26 September starting at 2:30 pm in Clarence House. Many of us meet beforehand in the cafeteria there.
The subject will be a collective group effort 'Puzzles and Inspirations'
We'll all have an opportunity to relate anything we find particularly puzzling about Science or Technology, but also to record any moment of inspiration, when something that had been puzzling us for a long time suddenly became clear.
When we had a similar meeting a few years ago everyone present confessed to being baffled by Quantum Theory, so if that is your puzzle, expect sympathy but don't count on receiving enlightenment.
To give everyone plenty of time to comment, this discussion will continue at the October meeting
As usual, I shall ask for a donation of 1 pound per head for room hire.
