once housed the city library, where Alfred Russel Wallace, then a schoolteacher in Leicester, and his friend Henry Walter Bates are thought to have developed their knowledge of biology. Wallace is co-discoverer with Charles Darwin of natural selection as the mechanism of evolution. Bates is the discoverer of Batesian mimicry.
