The Game
A card game for 2, 3 or 4 people. The aim is to be the first player to score 91 points. Players earn points during play and for making various card combinations in their hands.
The Pack
The standard 52-card pack is used.
Rank of Cards
(K, Q, J, 10)* 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A. *NB: all court cards and 10 = 10 points for all scoring and the cut.
The Draw, Shuffle and Cut
The cards are shuffled and each player cuts the pack and reveals their cut. The lowest becomes the dealer.
The Deal
The dealer then shuffles the cards, which are then cut by one of the dealer’s opponents. They are then dealt. One or two cards are then discarded to the box by each player and play commences. The stack of cards remaining following the deal is then cut by one of the non-dealers. That top card is then counted as part of each player’s own hand.
Play
The player to to the left of the dealer lays down a card in front of them and so on round the table, the aim of this section of the game is to score points for pairs, threes or even four of a kind, runs and totals 15 or 31 (both worth 2 pt.). The maximum total of spots in each section cannot exceed 31. If 31 is not achieved the last player receives 1 point, and play passes to the next player who has any cards left!
Scoring
The person on the dealer’s left shows their hand, adds up the score including the turn up and adds their score to the counting (crib) board. All players proceed to calculate their score in the same way. Each player then adds up the total score held in their hand (including Turn up) and adds that total to the crib board. Proceeding in the same way as previously, clockwise from the person after the dealer. When it comes to the dealer’s turn to show, they count their own score, followed by the score for the box as well.
The dealer for the next hand is the person on the left (clockwise round the table) of the present dealer. The game ends when one of the players reaches 91, 3 streets + 1 on the scoring board.
