Walking 2 - Long & Medium

Walking Coordinator: Noel Hughes, 07780 790032
Medium & Long walk leaders: Various
Venue: Brough Park Leisure Centre overflow car park
Time: Thursdays, 9:30am prompt (weekly)
Medium walk: 5–8 miles
Long walk: 8–11 miles

18-Mar-2020: Please note that due to the COVID-19 outbreak all walks are currently on hold until further notice.

Please contact the Walking Coordinator above to check current availability however as this is an outdoor activity there is normally no issue with group size.

Overall four walking groups explore the Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire countryside with walks that vary from 3 to 11 miles in length. You will walk in beautiful countryside, meet some friendly people and feel very healthy as well.

On Thursdays there are two walks:

  • A medium walk of 5–8 miles (avg. 6 miles)
  • A long walk of 8–11 miles

You can open or download the current PDF format programme file via the link on the right. If you have problems opening it, please let the Walking Coordinator (above) know either via the contact number or the Click to send a Message envelope top right.

Members of the Group take turns to lead walks but if you don't want to lead then simply join in with the group. Walks go on throughout the year (unless walking conditions are unsafe); are pre-walked and every care is taken to ensure members' safety.

All walkers must wear walking boots/shoes and carry their own packed lunch and drink to be consumed on the walk. During hot weather please ensure that you carry adequate liquid refreshments and sun cream, protective hat etc; during cold weather please ensure that you are suitably dressed for the elements.

Please note that dogs are not permitted on walks due to limitations of the U3A third party insurance policy.

We meet at Brough Park Leisure Centre overflow car park in Leek and fill a small number of cars to drive to the starting point of the walk which is usually circular. Just turn up, fully equipped as above. There is a small charge for passengers carried ranging between £2 and £4, the details are set out at the end of the walking programme.

A printed programme is produced every four months describing the walks, naming the leader, the mileage and the degree of difficulty. Copies can be obtained from the yellow Long Walks folder stored below the Noticeboard in Norton House, from the leaders prior to the start of the walk, or click the appropriate link on the top right of this page above.

If you use Google Calendar you may also add a copy of either the Long or Medium walks into your own Google calendar. Just click on the Click to send a Message link top right and send a request with your Gmail email address (in other words the email address you used to register with Google - your password is not required) to the Coordinator who will grant read permissions to the appropriate calendar. The calendar will then be listed in your Google Calendar under Other Calendars.

We have occasional pub lunches and in the summer months we arrange walking trips to different parts of the country, often stopping in a hotel or lodge overnight.
