PETANQUE – A SPORT FOR EVERYBODY

The sport of Petanque has its origins in the mists of time and has several different forms and names, probably of French origin.

The actual word Petanque means ‘tied feet’ and dates from when two friends were playing when one became wheelchair bound. Not wanting to give the sport up, the able-bodied friend suggested making a circle in which to stand, while his friend placed his chair over the circle, effectively ‘tying’ the feet together. This enabled both players to compete on a level playing field.

Some schools of thought suggest Francis Drake may have been playing a version of petanque or boules on Plymouth Hoe when he saw the Armada.

The modern game is played extensively in Europe and even as far afield as Australia. It is played on many levels, all providing enjoyment, socialisation and exercise in a friendly atmosphere.

Aficionado’s say petanque is an easy sport to learn but difficult to conquer, being played on many different surfaces each with their own individual characteristics.

There a two different types of boules, leisure boules (used by the group) available from stores such as The Range during the summer months; and competition boules (used by club players) available from specialist stores, online and in Europe. These are of a different, harder composition and the two must not be mixed in the same game due to the risk of leisure boules smashing.

The group meets on alternate Fridays from 2pm onwards and at present is free to U3A members. There is sufficient equipment to accommodate up to 9 players but if people have their own set of leisure boules by all means bring them along.
We hope to see you there
