We regret to announce that, with effect from 17 March 2020, all Lancaster and Morecambe U3A group meetings, monthly meetings, and educational trips and events have been cancelled due to coronavirus.
Further details and advice are available on the News Page.
We have around 100 interest groups covering a wide range of subjects and we arrange a varied programme of social and educational events and trips. Every month, we meet as a group in both Lancaster and Morecambe and we regularly publish a diary and a newsletter to keep members and the public informed about what is going on.
Please contact the Groups Coordinator for more information about our activities.
Information about groups is available online:
- The public List of Groups contains details of each group and how often it meets.
- The public Online Diary shows all group meeting dates and venue, and is searchable by individual group
- Numbers are limited in some groups. Please contact the Groups Coordinator for more information if you are a non-U3A member who would like to visit one of our group meetings
- The Members Portal is accessed using information on the LMU3A membership card
Groups are the backbone of our U3A. There is at least one group meeting in both the morning and afternoon of most week days. We also have a number of weekend and evening activities. The groups meet at a variety of locations within Lancaster and Morecambe or at members' own homes. The most frequently used venue is the Lancaster Friends' Meeting House (LFMH) although we are, of course, not connected with the Quakers (or any other religion).
To cover the cost of hiring rooms in various locations and the expense of running groups, we typically ask members to pay a small charge per meeting. The charge includes refreshments. Purely external meetings, such as walks, are free although a reasonable contribution for petrol is expected from those having a lift.
Have a look at our Guidelines for Group Leaders which explains how to set up and run a group, together with the Accident Report and Expenses Claim forms, and our policies on Home Groups charging and Authorisation of Purchases.
Events and trips
We provide a varied programme of trips and events throughout the year to places of interest, either by coach or car. Recent events include a ceilidh, theatre visits, a garden festival, Gilbert & Sullivan, and a 4-day holiday to the North East. Some of these are under the auspices of a particular group, others are of general interest. All events and trips are open to all Lancaster and Morecambe U3A members although, occasionally, regular group members have to be given priority - especially if a coach is used and this is full.
At the Lancaster Monthly Meeting on the fourth Tuesday of the month the Events Group have a stand in the back room at the Dukes Theatre with posters and sign-up sheets. Please visit us or get in touch with the Groups Coordinator if you would like to join our lively company.
Lancaster and Morecambe Monthly Meetings
Meetings are held every month in Lancaster and in Morecambe. The Lancaster meeting is at the Dukes Playhouse and is currently held on the fourth Tuesday of the month. The Morecambe meeting is at Torrisholme Methodist Church Hall and is currently held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Both meetings start at 10.00 a.m. with an informal half-hour for coffee/tea and biscuits followed at 10.30 a.m. by the main meeting. All members are welcome. Our U3A provides its own leaders and coordinators for its group activities but, on the occasion of the monthly meeting, a speaker is invited to talk to the whole group.
There is a £2 charge at Monthly Meetings to cover room hire and refreshments.
Every January, we hold our Annual General Meeting, which forms part of the monthly meeting, and is when reports are given, the Committee is elected, and members are encouraged to influence the way we do things.
Diary and Newsletter
We publish a Diary and a Newsletter.
The online Diary is public and sets out the timetable for group meetings. There is a monthly Members Diary, listed under the "Links" heading, which includes the timetable for group meetings and venue and contact details. It is an online document and requires a password. All members receive an email version of this diary. A Members portal also provides access to the diary via a log in page using information shown on the membership card.
A monthly Members Newsletter, listed under the Links heading, provides news about our U3A. The online version requires a password and all members receive an email version. The News page on this website is a public version of the newsletter.
Paper copies of the newsletter and diary are produced and distributed to those members that require them. They are expensive to prepare, both in volunteers' time and cost. They can either be picked up at a Monthly Meeting or, for those not attending a monthly meeting, circulation is by post or personal delivery.
