Groups

A core principle of the U3A is that learning groups are set up in response to demand from members. Any member is welcome to suggest a topic of interest for a group and even just a couple of other interested members may be enough to get a new group started. Each group has an Organiser, who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the group. Each learning group cooperatively explores its chosen topic, using members' own interests and prior knowledge. Meetings tend to be informal, and take place wherever best meets the needs of the group, for example in a member's home, in a venue such as a coffee shop or pub, or by arrangement in a community facility.

Groups are self-managing and determine their own approach to their own learning. This could include, for example, drawing on the U3A's national pool of expertise, inviting contributions from outside experts, or the use of online learning. It could involve someone with relevant expertise acting as leader to structure the learning, but this would be a matter for the group to decide. Flexibility and the autonomy of groups are key to the whole approach.

The annual membership fee of £20 entitles members to join any number of learning groups. There are no further costs, other than those that may be agreed by individual groups, for example to cover the cost of hiring a room or equipment.

If you wish to start a new group or discuss the process, please contact the Membership Secretary.
