Kings Norton & District

Walking - Over 5m

Group Leader: Steve Wright (email: steve.wri@btinternet.com; tel: 0121 475 4005)

We meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday each month (with occasional variations due to Christmas and other bank holidays). Walks are normally of between 6 and 8 miles, using a variety of paths, tracks, tow-paths and avoiding roads as far as possible. They are aimed at those with some country walking experience but are not overly strenuous, although they may well include hilly bits. Participants are expected to have sturdy boots or shoes and carry waterproofs and/or sun-gear, as appropriate, a packed lunch and also snacks and drink.

Details of each walk are emailed to all group members a few days before each event. Unless otherwise specified for a particular walk, we meet at Rowheath Pavilion between 9:15 and 9:30 am to co-ordinate transport and aim to finish walking usually by 3 pm. Except for a very few special cases, walks are within a 1 hour drive.

Last year our walks ranged from local walks over Lickey and Clent Hills, to a wild daffodil walk in south-west Gloucestershire. This Autumn, we explored the Suckley Hills, a delightful area west of Worcester, virtually unknown by almost all our group - even the leader! There we found numerous species of fungus, including a patch of enormous parasol mushrooms.

This year, so far, we've done a (very muddy) walk from Kings Norton to Maypole via Forhill and a (fairly muddy) walk over the Arrow Valley park. Our next walk will be on Thursday, February 13th and will be based on the Dudmaston estate, near Bridgnorth, renowned for its snowdrops (and hopefully a bit less mud).

Details of the rest of our 2020 walks are listed below, although specific walk plans are still to be decided, but are likely to include the Malvern Hills, the Wrekin and the Long Mynd, as well as more local areas.
