This group started in January 2017 looking at philosophers of the past and their approach to the main philosophical problems, such as: how can we experience the world? is it possible to know anything, how do we justify our moral framework? and how should we organise society? It is led by me, Mary Martell.
Having had a brief look at the Great Philosophers in chronological order the group will be continuing in Autumn 2018, using a book by Nigel Warburton, 'Philosophy the basics' to guide us through the fundamentals of philosophy topic by topic. We will be looking at the major philosophical problems and theories about religion, morality, the nature of reality etc.
The format will be for everyone to read the next chapter in the book prior to a meeting and for those who wish to do a little extra research into philosophers mentioned, or topics discussed within the chapter and write a short piece to give to the group. Then the session will be largely a debate on the merits of different viewpoints.
Meetings will be held on the first Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm at Mary's house in Chillington. The first meeting will be on 4th September and new members are welcome.
