We meet on the second and fourth Fridays from 2-4pm at the Waverley Day Centre, to read and discuss poets and poems that group members wish to explore in more depth.
The Group's aim is to enhance members' enjoyment of poetry through the reading and discussion of poems and by looking at the lives and works of individual poets. The main concentration is on contemporary poetry written in English but we also go back in time to the 19th Century and earlier and appraise foreign poets in translation.
Our method of working is that individual members of the group choose a poet or a theme and bring copies of the poems to be discussed in advance so that members can read through them before discussion. All members also have a copy of an anthology of poems that we use as occasional alternative, Being Alive.
in April 2017 the Poetry Group celebrated its Tenth Anniversary by each member revealing and discussing his or her top ten favourite poems. Four founder members are still in the Group and two others joined shortly afterwards. Poetry is obviously addictive!
