Isles of Scilly

Walking

The walking group meets on the second Thursday of the month, usually in the morning but we'll take a lunch and spend longer, or go to one of the off-islands if the weather is good. Unlike most mainland walking groups we don't plan a programme of walks in advance but rather look at the weather conditions nearer the time and plan our outings accordingly. I usually send a group e-mail the weekend beforehand.

We have walked around St. Agnes, Bryher and St. Martin's as well as a great many of the footpaths on St. Mary's. We try to vary our walks each month and although our walking is limited by the fact that we live on an island, and the weather is very changeable, we know that there will always be something beautiful to look at - and so often the weather will break through from fog to sunshine.

In fact, on a potentially unpromising day in January last year, the sun blessed us and from Peninnis Head a whole pod of dolphins entertained us.

I am assured by the group that coffee and cake is mandatory! Not difficult in the summer months, but to plan an interesting walk with a coffee stop in the winter is more of a challenge. But where else could you pop into the airport after a windy costal walk for coffee and lemon drizzle cake?!
