Isles of Scilly

Members of St. Mary's U3A meet every third Thursday of the month at the Methodist Hall, Church Street, at 10.30 a.m. and begin with a chat over coffee. This is followed by a speaker from the islands or a guest speaker from the mainland.

Although summaries of talks will no longer be uploaded to this website, you can still read accounts of some previous ones by clicking on Links on the right of this page.

Our fifth Christmas lunch at the Pavilion was another enjoyable affair with delicious food prepared by Euan from Tanglewood and entertainment provided by a group of young flautists from The Five Islands Academy.

Everyone is very welcome to come along to our monthly meetings, have a chat and find out if U3A is for you. There's a very good chance that you will find something to interest you! U3A members planning a holiday on Scilly are most welcome to join us and a number already have!

19/3/20 Today we should have been holding our AGM but the Cttee. decided to postpone it as a precautionary measure because of the risk of the Coronavirus. At this meeting, our Chairman for the past 3 years, Mike Gurr, was to step down. In view of the fact that we may not be able to hold the AGM for some months, Mike has officially resigned from the Cttee. and on behalf of all our members, we have thanked him for all the time and effort he has given to the IOS U3A. He also took on the role of organising our monthly speakers and always promoted vigorously the U3A ethos of friendship, learning and great opportunities to improve general well-being and mental health. Mike wants to continue to be an active member of U3A and will continue to lead the Music Group.

As from today, members are starting to think about ways to keep our interest groups active by creating group chats/discussions on Zoom, and home-based activities. For example, Jan, group leader, is preparing exercises designed to practise the skills of watercolour painting; other groups might consider researching a topic/theme which members can share via e-mail. Hopefully, these and other ideas should help to keep alive the spirit of our U3A and help our groups to flourish throughout the coming months.

Monthly meetings from March to July inclusive have been cancelled. We do not meet in August so we will be waiting for Govt. guidelines as to when it is safe for groups to meet up again.

It is now July and the Gardening Group, led by Margaret Davis, has been continuing with the U3A Community Project. Margaret planted over 100 spring bulbs which produced a lovely display and withstood quite windy conditions. Now the summer bedding plants are all in flower and together with the perennial grasses, they are looking stunning and providing pleasure to all passers-by during this period of relative isolation.
